Sumo Logic vs Splunk cost: Flex vs per-GB at scale, 2026

Head-to-head cost comparison built from published rates. Sumo Logic on its published credit burn rates (Cloud Flex Credits at $0.25 per credit; Flex at $1.50 MSRP with free ingest but credits on storage, search and Cloud SIEM ingest) versus per-GB Splunk at five environment profiles, plus a five-year view. Splunk baseline set to its filed 2026 list pricing. Updated October 2026.

Flex credits versus per-GB: where the math diverges

Sumo Logic and Splunk meter log data on fundamentally different bases. Splunk prices on per-gigabyte ingest, with Enterprise Security as a separate licence and retention-tier surcharges that scale with the retention period. Sumo Logic publishes two credit schemes. On Enterprise Suite Flex ($1.50 per credit MSRP, US annual) log ingest is free and credits are burned by storage (0.05 per GB stored per day), search (10 per GB scanned upfront, 20 metered) and Cloud SIEM ingest (40 per GB). On the Cloud Flex Credit plans ($0.25 per credit list for Enterprise Suite) ingest burns credits (25 per GB Continuous, 12 Frequent, 5 Infrequent) alongside the same storage and Cloud SIEM rates. Either way there is no single per-GB-per-day headline, so the comparison below states its assumptions.

At published list rates Sumo does not undercut Splunk for a SIEM workload. At 50 GB per day with 30-day retention and a tenth of the data through Cloud SIEM, Sumo's Enterprise Suite Cloud Flex Credits come to about $127.8K against about $124K for Splunk Cloud with Enterprise Security. Flex at MSRP is higher, $219K to $424K, because at $1.50 per credit a GB scanned costs about $15 and a GB of Cloud SIEM ingest about $60. Retention does not rescue it: Sumo storage burns 0.05 credits per GB stored per day, so a year of retention costs about twelve times 30 days. For a 50 GB-per-day environment held 365 days, Sumo comes to about $204.2K on Cloud Flex Credits and $678K to $883K on Flex at MSRP, where Splunk Cloud with Enterprise Security and retention extension lands around $174K to $244K.

The gap widens with volume, because Splunk's per-GB list ladder tapers as volume rises while Sumo's burn rates are flat per GB. Two caveats cut the other way. Sumo labels its burn rates as examples, with the actual rate set on the order form, and both vendors negotiate well below list on large deals. And Sumo's published terms also add a default 10 percent increase in net annual fees at each renewal unless agreed otherwise in writing, which is worth capping in the first contract. The honest 2026 picture on published rates: Sumo Cloud Flex Credits run close to Splunk at 50 GB per day, Flex at MSRP runs well above it, and the case for Sumo rests on negotiated price, short retention and selective search rather than on the list.

Annual figures at list, before negotiated discounts. Sumo figures are our arithmetic over the burn rates on sumologic.com/pricing/cloud-flex-credit (updated 4 June 2026, read 13 October 2026), assuming 10 percent of daily ingest goes through Cloud SIEM at 40 credits per GB. CFC: Enterprise Suite Cloud Flex Credits at $0.25, Continuous ingest 25 credits per GB on the rest, storage 0.05 credits per GB stored per day. Flex: Enterprise Suite Flex at $1.50 MSRP, free ingest, storage at the same 0.05 credits, Upfront Search at 10 credits per GB with 0.25x to 1x of daily ingest scanned each day. Sumo states its burn rates are examples and the order form governs.

FAQ

Common questions

Is Sumo Logic cheaper than Splunk for a 50 GB-per-day environment?

Not at list. Splunk Cloud at 50 GB per day plus Enterprise Security lists at about $124K following Splunk's filed 2026 list pricing (about $63K base ingest plus about $61K for Enterprise Security). On Sumo's published burn rates, with 30-day retention and 5 GB per day of the 50 going through Cloud SIEM, our arithmetic gives about $127.8K on Enterprise Suite Cloud Flex Credits ($0.25 per credit: Continuous ingest 25 credits per GB, Cloud SIEM ingest 40, storage 0.05 per GB per day) and $219K to $424K on Enterprise Suite Flex at the $1.50 MSRP (ingest free, but storage 0.05 credits per GB per day, search 10 credits per GB scanned and Cloud SIEM ingest 40 credits per GB). Sumo labels its burn rates as examples set finally on the order form, and both vendors discount, so negotiated outcomes can differ widely.

Does Sumo Logic win long-retention scenarios?

Not on its published list rates. Sumo charges storage at 0.05 credits per GB stored per day on both credit schemes, so holding a year of data costs about twelve times holding 30 days. For a 50 GB-per-day environment held 365 days, our arithmetic gives about $204.2K a year on Enterprise Suite Cloud Flex Credits (of which about $83.3K is storage) and $678K to $883K on Flex at MSRP (about $499.6K storage), against roughly $174K to $244K for Splunk Cloud with Enterprise Security and retention extension. On Cloud Flex Credits the two land roughly even; on Flex at MSRP, Splunk is cheaper. The cheaper Sumo route for rarely-read retention is the Infrequent tier on a Cloud Flex Credit plan.

When does Splunk genuinely beat Sumo Logic?

Splunk wins for mature SOCs with deep custom ES content built over years (migration cost outweighs licence saving), for organisations whose detection content depth and search performance are the binding constraint, for very large enterprises above 1,500 GB per day where multi-year EA discounts close the gap, and for environments where Splunk has become the de facto data analytics platform across IT use cases beyond security alone. Splunk also wins where the SOC runs very query-heavy workloads, since Flex bills 10 to 20 credits per GB scanned, and at Sumo's published list rates for most volume bands on this page. And Splunk wins where the customer's SOC analyst training and muscle memory makes Sumo's query language a productivity tax that licence saving cannot recover within reasonable payback windows.

What about Sumo Logic Cloud SIEM analytics depth versus Splunk Enterprise Security?

Sumo Logic Cloud SIEM (an additional purchase on Enterprise Security, Enterprise Suite and Enterprise Suite Flex, burning 40 credits per GB ingested) covers the same conceptual territory as Splunk Enterprise Security: detection rules, signals, threat intelligence integration, investigations, MITRE ATT&CK mapping. The depth is meaningfully shallower than ES in 2026: smaller content library, less sophisticated correlation language, fewer pre-built investigation playbooks. For SOCs whose detection sophistication is moderate-to-strong, Sumo Cloud SIEM is genuinely sufficient. For SOCs whose investigations routinely require ES-grade depth (high-end financial services, defence, advanced threat hunting), Splunk maintains a structural advantage.

What is the migration cost from Splunk to Sumo Logic?

Migration cost varies materially with detection content depth and analyst retraining. By our estimate, a typical mid-market migration (50 GB per day, 200 detections, 8-person SOC) runs $100K-$200K in professional services plus 4-6 months calendar time. Migration of Splunk SPL queries to Sumo Logic search query syntax is the largest single workstream. Because Sumo does not undercut Splunk at list on our assumptions, the migration case rests on a negotiated Sumo price, capability fit or consolidation, so price the payback from your actual quotes. The decision should weigh detection content portability (SIGMA-aligned content migrates faster than Splunk-native ES content) and SOC retraining capacity. Sumo Logic provides credible migration tooling and partner network for Splunk-to-Sumo migrations.
